Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ/ Zanzibar Gem)
The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia), commonly known as Zanzibar Gem, is a hardy and popular indoor plant prized for its thick, glossy, dark green leaves and exceptional tolerance to low light and drought.
Originating from Eastern Africa, this plant is perfect for both beginners and experienced plant lovers seeking a resilient, low-maintenance houseplant with a striking architectural form. Its rhizomes store water, allowing it to survive periods of neglect.
Care Instructions:
-
Light: Thrives in low to bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight that can scorch leaves.
-
Water: Allow soil to dry out completely between watering; water sparingly every 2-4 weeks depending on conditions. Overwatering may cause root rot.
-
Soil: Use well-draining potting mix, such as a cactus or succulent blend amended with perlite.
-
Fertilisation: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser; reduce feeding during autumn and winter.
-
Maintenance: Remove any yellow or damaged leaves; wipe leaves with a damp cloth monthly to remove dust and enhance photosynthesis.
-
Repotting: Typically every 2-3 years to refresh soil and inspect roots; use pots with drainage holes.
