Potting mix is a soil-less solution often used for its improved aeration and drainage. A high-quality indoor potting mix can include peat moss, bark, perlite, pumice and other sterile minerals, though some potting mixes contain slow-release starters or fertiliser.
We recommend potting mix for indoor plants that prefer dry conditions, as a good potting mix will retain the right amount of moisture while giving your little ones enough air to thrive. We stock the best indoor plant potting mix that Sydney has to offer, perfect for giving your indoor beauties a mineral boost.
Not sure which type of indoor potting mix is right for you? At Plant Daddy, there’s nothing we love more than helping fellow plant parents get the best out of their little ones. Get in touch or visit our Newtown studio today!
FAQs about indoor potting mix and plant soil
What's the difference between potting soil and potting mix?
Many new plant parents don’t understand the difference between potting soil and potting mix, and we don’t blame them! Take a look at the differences between potting soil and potting mix with our handy cheat sheet:
- Potting soil — Potting soil is a mix of soil, compost and organic materials like perlite, peat moss and minerals. Potting soil often includes nutrient-rich elements like worm castings, bone meal, barley, crustacean blends and more to help your little ones thrive!
A good indoor plant soil mix will be dense, heavy and full of live ingredients. This means that potting soil is susceptible to diseases and other pathogens. It also has less drainage and aeration than potting mix, which is great for plants that prefer moist conditions. - Potting mix — This sterile, soil-free solution is great for plants with a dry sense of humour. The combination of organic and inorganic components like peat moss, bark, perlite and pumice keeps things light and airy, perfect for succulents and cacti. Plus, potting mix retains less water than plant soil, so your little ones won’t get drenched!
Different plants need different types of potting soil or potting mix to thrive. If you’re a plant newbie, get in touch with our friendly team of plant parents — we’ll find the perfect mix for your budding beauties!
Can I reuse the same potting soil for different plants?
Short answer? Yes. If the plants in your potting soil are healthy, you can reuse this soil for another plant.
However, there are a few things to consider before reusing the same potting soil. It’s essential to make sure the used soil is free from insects and diseases. You CAN sterilise the soil by heating it in your oven or microwave, but we recommend replacing contaminated soil rather than trying to reuse it.
At Plant Daddy, we’re all about reducing, reusing and recycling. But when it comes to potting soil, fresher is always better!
Potting soil contains a unique mix of nutrients that your plants absorb as they grow. Potting soil that’s already been used will be missing these essential nutrients, so you’ll have to put in some extra work to add all that tasty goodness back in. You can mix your existing soil with fresh soil and throw in some slow-release fertiliser pellets to add nutrients — however, the result won’t be as nutritious and delicious as fresh potting soil.
As a general rule, we recommend giving each of your plant babies fresh potting soil to help them grow up big and strong!
